At Our Space – Ardaaga, we proudly marked the 65th anniversary of June 26, 1960—a historic date remembered as the Independence Day of Northern Somalia (Gobollada Waqooyi).
This momentous occasion symbolizes the beginning of Somalia’s journey toward self-determination and unity. In honor of this legacy, we brought together the youth of Kismayo for a special circle discussion, one of Ardaaga’s signature civic engagement formats.

The event welcomed a vibrant cross-section of the community, including young leaders, women, intellectuals, and local politicians, who gathered to reflect on the historical significance of the day. Participants shared memories, examined the continued relevance of independence in today’s civic life, and connected past struggles to present responsibilities in building a more inclusive, democratic Somalia.

The conversation emphasized the importance of preserving shared histories while nurturing a politically aware generation ready to shape the future. This gathering not only commemorated a national milestone but also reinforced Ardaaga’s mission to empower communities through dialogue, education, and civic participation.
As we reflect on the past, we remain committed to building a future where every voice counts.
